What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based upon the understanding that health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body). Optimizing the functioning of the spine leads to pain relief and better health. This is because our nervous system controls all of our body's physiological systems and therefore all functions.

"Chiropractic" comes from the Greek word chiropraktikos, meaning "effective treatment by hand." Chiropractic stresses the idea that the cause of many disease processes begins with the body's inability to adapt to its environment. Chiropractic looks to address these diseases not by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting the area of the spine which is causing a dysfunction in the nervous system. When the dysfunction is removed this allows the body to naturally heal itself, thus reducing pain and improving function in the body.

What conditions benefit from Chiropractic care?

Scientific studies have found Chiropractic,to be effective for a variety of conditions, such as lower back pain, migraine headaches, neck and shoulder pain, pinched nerves, arthritis, herniated discs, sciatica, carpal tunnel syndrome, and fibromyalgia. Chiropractic also helps childhood conditions, such as ear infections, asthma, bed wetting, scoliosis, and colic. Chiropractic even relieves the stress and tension that may be felt during pregnancy allowing for a more comfortable pregnancy.

Because chiropractic is so effective in relieving pain and improving function, we treat a wide range of problems -- everything from auto accidents and work injuries to sports injuries, repetitive motion syndromes, overuse injuries, arthritis, disc injuries, painful degeneration, and chronic pain.

How are Chiropractic adjustments done?

Chiropractic adjustments are carefully directed, gentle thrusts to specific joints. The adjustments are aimed in a direction to restore normal movement and alignment of your spine or extremities. This can be accomplished by the doctor using his hands or by the use of an instrument. An adjustment is a very safe, gentle and effective treatment.

Does Chiropractic hurt?

Under normal circumstances, adjustments don't hurt. Few patients may experience a minor amount of discomfort during the adjustment which lasts only seconds. Adjustments help to reduce pain, however certain reactions such as aching or soreness in the joints or muscles may be experienced. In general, you will feel pain relief after an adjustment.

Is Chiropractic safe?

Chiropractic adjustments or manipulations are extremely safe. The risk factor is estimated to be in excess of one million to one. Chiropractic care is safer than back surgery and medications because it looks to address problems not by the use of drugs and chemicals, but by locating and adjusting an area of the body which is functioning improperly.

Once you go to a Chiropractor, do you have to go Forever?

No! Some people use chiropractic to relieve symptoms while others receive chiropractic to improve their overall health and quality of life. We try to educate our patients on the benefits of chiropractic care and allow each person to decide on the treatment that is right for them. Levels of chiropractic care include relief care (symptom oriented), corrective care (correcting long term problems) and health enhancing care (fostering optimum joint and nervous system function).

Simply put, you do not have to do anything for the rest of your life--it is your choice. You can choose not to brush your teeth, not to change the oil in your car, not to make repairs to your home, not to eat a healthy diet, and not to exercise. However, there are consequences to your actions. If you want to get the most mileage out of your body, then yes, you must take care of it for the rest of your life. The spine and nervous system are no exception.

So, just like you would go to a dentist forever to maintain good dental hygiene, we suggest that people get a chiropractic check up at regular intervals. This simple routine can help prevent joint injury, joint deterioration, and improve nervous system function, and therefore enhance overall health.

Do you have same day appointments?

Yes! Often times if you call the same day we will be able to get you an appointment. It's always best to schedule your appointment ahead of time to ensure that we will be able to accommodate your schedule as best as possible. But if need be, we will always do our best to make sure you are seen the same day that you call.

What can I expect on my first visit?

The first thing Dr. Spees will do is ask you about the health complaints you are seeking treatment for. He will also ask about your family history, dietary habits, other care you may have had (chiropractic, osteopathic, medical, etc.), your job, and other questions designed to help determine the nature of your illness and the best way to go about treating the problem. This will enable the doctor to fully understand your current health care needs.

A physical examination will be performed in accordance with Dr. Spees' clinical judgment, which may include x-rays, laboratory analysis, and other diagnostic procedures. In addition, a careful spinal examination and analysis will be performed to detect any structural abnormalities which may be affecting or causing your condition. All of these elements are important components of your total health profile, and vital to the doctor of chiropractic in evaluating your problem.

From all of this gathered information, Dr. Spees will tailor a customized plan of action for your specific condition aimed at reaching your individual health goals. This information will be presented on the second visit where Dr. Spees will answer these questions:

1) What is your particular problem?

2) Can your problem be helped by our office?

3) How long will it take to correct your problem?

4) How much will it cost to correct the problem?

How often do I get treated and how long will it take?

If you have been injured or have spent many years abusing your spine, it will take time to retrain your back and guide you back to health. After your initial visit, Dr. Spees will design a treatment program for you that will include regular chiropractic adjustments, therapeutic services (such as massage), and exercises to be done at home. These will vary depending on the nature and scope of your specific condition or problem. Every individual is different, so their treatment length and frequency is often different as well.

How much will it cost?
